What happens when the home is not a safe place during quarantine? Do stay-at-home orders protect everyone’s safety in a global pandemic? This course will focus on how the Covid-19 pandemic has created a second pandemic that increases domestic abuse and violence. We will explore how a worldwide lockdown has affected the resources and services available to victims. Students will explore the actions and resources of area hospitals, governments, and shelters in New England. We will also analyze global responses from Uganda, Kosovo, and other countries. Through readings, case studies, guest speakers, and class discussions, we will examine the negative impact of public health policies on the safety and health of individuals, primarily women. We will briefly discuss how other forms of violence against women have also been exacerbated by the pandemic. Students will conclude the course by creating a policy proposal with recommendations on how to best address domestic violence during future public health emergencies or pandemics.

This was the original syllabus I proposed for my course.

As the semester progressed and I began creating lesson plans, I adjusted my syllabus and my plan for the semester. These changes are reflected in this second syllabus.
